3-D navigation tool developed (HydroVista)

A boost in three-dimensional technology in the oil and gas industry has allowed for the visualization of construction sites in the deep sea. Surveying firm John E. Chance & Associates, Inc. has taken this technology one step further by allowing visualization in real-time through development of HydroVista, the latest in high-tech software.

Incorporated into Chance's proprietary navigation system, STARFIX.NAV®, HydroVista is on the cutting edge of three-dimensional visualization. Large sets of multi-parameter geophysical data such as multi-beam bathymetry or existing information from the MMS can be imported and used to create a virtual 3D environment. Three-dimensional CAD images can also be imported to show subsea objects or platforms, thus bringing the virtual environment to life. This visualization method allows real-time navigation around proposed and existing subsea construction sites, increasing conceptual development and communication between project teams in ways which traditional two-dimensional maps never have.

The process of selecting the optimum route for pipelines, umbilicals and telecommunications lines is revolutionized with HydroVista. The virtual environment is developed by importing geophysical data obtained during a preliminary survey. The alignment of the proposed line is draped on the 3D surface and a path created along the route just above the surface. The route can then be viewed by following the path automatically or at manually selected perspectives. Quick profiles and perspectives aid in analysis to minimize spans and obstructions to the installation -- reducing overall project costs.
