National Capital Planning Commission
To facilitate planning and improve day-to-day operations and public services, the National Capital Planning Commission contracted with Fugro EarthData in 1995 to develop a GIS for Washington DC. Fugro EarthData collected more than 750 aerial photographs over the 96 sq mi city and produced orthorectified images to provide a map delineating street edges, historical monuments, government buildings, fire hydrants, manholes, and other cultural features in their correct geographic positions. The resulting base map enabled city agencies to update and improve their existing maps while converting them, along with other data, into a flexible and versatile GIS that serves a multitude of city government agencies.
