Manhattan model used in "The Day After Tomorrow"

Twentieth Century Fox

Fugro EarthData worked with Twentieth Century Fox to create Manhattan and Los Angeles 3D city models for the big budget film The Day After Tomorrow. Though primarily intended for pre-visualization purposes prior to on-location filming, the models were so accurate and comprehensive that the film's visual effects group used the data as the basis of many special effects scenes. For example, the city models were used to explore how changes would affect future scenes and to provide a fluid sense of the entire picture. By eliminating early on the shots that did not work, the 3D city models helped Twentieth Century Fox save substantial amounts of time and money. Fugro EarthData's 3D city models have also been used by Industrial Light and Magic for Minority Report and by Sony Pictures for Spider-Man.
